Bloomberg/BusinessWeek: Intel's new Xeon 5600 server chip officially goes on sale today, but the company has already shipped over 100,000 of the processors. The new chip is Intel's first to include six cores, and it also adds new security features.
Analysts say the move marks an attempt to get ahead of arch-rival AMD which will introduce 8- and 12- core chips later this month. Intel contends that their chips offer better performance with fewer cores. Theyve taken the path of throwing a lot of cores at the performance problem, and ultimately thats a challenge, Intels Boyd Davis said. Based on the raw performance numbers, were going to be in very good shape.
