Patently Apple: Yesterday, Apple filed patents for a new social networking technology with geo-location capabilities. Called "iGroups" the new iPhone service would let groups of friends or colleagues attending the same event stay in touch with each other. The app would likely work with the Mobile Me service to provide "virtual GPS" capabilities so that friends could find each other, even if one of their phones does not have built-in GPS.

This is Apple's fourth patent application related to social networking since the beginning of 2010.
