SFGate: In its 34 year history, Apple has bought a grand total of 28 companies--less than one per year. But this year, the company seems to be changing its ways. In 2010, Apple has purchased six new companies, most recently Poly9 Group, which creates 3-D global maps.
Almost all of Apple's recent acquisitions relate to mobile technology, and seem geared to helping the company stay ahead of competitor Google. "I think you'll see more acquisitions by Apple and you'll see them in key technology areas where they don't command right now and are maybe vulnerable against the competition," said Jack Gold, analyst with J. Gold Associates. "I think a lot of this has to do with Google because Apple's primary competition going forward is (Google's) Android operating system."
