NY Times: On Friday, Google announced its purchase of Metaweb, a San Francisco start-up that maintains Freebase, a database that tracks the connections between 12 million things. The company says that the purchase will help Google return smarter answers to difficult search queries, for example, providing a list of names to query like “colleges on the West Coast with tuition under $30,000.”

“The Web isn’t merely words, explained Google's Jack Menzel. “It’s information about things in the real world, and understanding the relationships between real-world entities can help us deliver relevant information more quickly.”
