NY Times: On Friday, Google announced its purchase of Metaweb, a San Francisco start-up that maintains Freebase, a database that tracks the connections between 12 million things. The company says that the purchase will help Google return smarter answers to difficult search queries, for example, providing a list of names to query like colleges on the West Coast with tuition under $30,000.
The Web isnt merely words, explained Google's Jack Menzel. Its information about things in the real world, and understanding the relationships between real-world entities can help us deliver relevant information more quickly.
