TechWorld: At next week's Black Hat Security Conference, researchers will reveal how easy it has become for hackers to eavesdrop on mobile phone conversations. A recently released piece of software called Kraken allows users to break the A5/1 encryption used for GSM calls very quickly.

While the group hasn't published a complete set of tools for listening to calls (which would be illegal in some countries) they say that all the necessary technology is available. "Our attack is so easy to carry out, and the cost of attack is lowered so significantly, that there is now a real danger of widespread intercepting of calls," warned one of the researchers.
