InfoWorld: Last week, security researchers posted details of a zero-day vulnerability that exploits a bug in the way Microsoft Windows handles shortcuts. Until now, the only workarounds for the problem involved changing all shortcut icons to a generic image--making many of the OS's main features difficult to use.

However, security firm Sophos has posted on its Web site a "Sophos Windows Shortcut Exploit Protection Tool," which it says will protect users until Microsoft releases a patch.

Microsoft has not endorsed the tool.
