ExtremeTech: IBM will begin shipping the fastest microprocessor ever later this month. The 5.2-GHz z196 chip will power Big Blue's Z-Series mainframes. It contains 1.4 billion transistors and measures 512 square millimeters.
The previous fastest microprocessor was IBM's POWER6 chip, which ran at speeds of up to 4.6 to 4.7 GHz.
