Greenpeace: Think cloud computing is green? Not so fast, says Greenpeace. The organization cites a study that claims "The global carbon footprint of the main components of cloud-based computing - data centres and the telecommunications network - would see their emissions grow, on average, 7% and 5% respectively each year between 2002-2020."
As data centers grow, they also use more electricity. And unless that electricity comes from clean sources, Greenpeace says cloud computing will actually result in a larger carbon footprint for the IT industry.
