Desktop Distros

The GNU/Linux desktop has come a long way in the last decade, and now rivals both Windows and OS X. Much of this development is due to the GNOME and KDE desktops rather than any particular distro. However, some distributions still stand out for their extra attention to usability.

Linux Mint:: Although based on Ubuntu repositories, Linux Mint boasts desktop touches all its own, including its own tools for configuring GNOME and wireless, and for Windows compatibility. It also has a reputation for being faster than Ubuntu because of some default configuration options.

Mandriva: Formerly Mandrake, Mandriva used to be considered the leading desktop distro. Although eclipsed by new distros like Ubuntu in public opinion, Mandriva continues to offer one of the polished desktop experiences available, particularly for system administration and configuration.

Ubuntu: Generally considered the most user-friendly distro today, Ubuntu is a Debian derivative that is rapidly outgrowing its parent. Boasting an active, well-organized community, Ubuntu is available in several sub-projects, including Kbuntu (featuring the KDE Desktop, Xbuntu (featuring the Xfce desktop) and Edubuntu (an educational version).
